Abstract
In chronic renal failure, serum electrolyte changes were significant factors for development of various uremic symptoms and metabolic acidosis. Serum electrolytes were measured immediately before and after hemodialysis in 31 patients with chronic renal failure.
Dialysis removes retained nitrogenous metabolites and returns serum electrolyte concentrations toward normal. The creatinine level had some correlation with the potassium and the anion gap. Metabolic acidosis such as decreased bicarbonate and increased anion gap was markedly improved immediately after hemodialysis.
